Job Description

Position type: Seasonal, full time and part-time positions available
Location: Denali National Park and Preserve, Alaska
Pay: $18-22 per hour, DOE  

Alaska Geographic is currently seeking experienced educators that enjoy having the wilderness as their classroom and can create meaningful connections for visitors to Denali’s amazing ecosystems.  

Essential Functions  

The primary responsibility of instructional staff will be the delivery of informative and engaging science-based programs that will leave visitors with a lasting connection to Denali and an appreciation of scientific research in the wilderness. The Science Educator is primarily responsible for delivering two educational programs; Family Time and Presentations.  

Responsibilities and Duties  

Family Time:  

  • Lead 45-minute interpretive hikes for families starting and ending at the Denali Visitor Center (DVC) which include teaching about current park science, Denali’s flora and fauna, and ecosystem dynamics through hands on, engaging learning opportunities  
  • Set up materials and props and staff an interactive information table or active learning experience at the DVC  
  • Spend time in high traffic areas answering questions, providing education, advertising AK Geo programs and support participant education  
  • Support the Junior Ranger program by handing out books, interacting with participants, swearing in Junior Rangers and answering questions about the program  
  • Update curriculum throughout the season including creating new lessons  
  • Keep accurate records and updated data on participant demographics and participation  

Presentations:  

  • Provide engaging thirty minute and one-hour presentations about science in Denali to tour groups of diverse audiences including children and elderly participants. Many presentations include a food service component.  
  • Coordinate food service, assist with dining room set up and clean up, facilitate a smooth and pleasant visitor experience, and support kitchen staff  
  • Adapt presentation content and timing to suite groups needs  
  • Connect and build rapport with park concessionaires and tour directors  

Science Educators will also support other programs. These duties may include:  

  • Shopping for, preparing, and packing food for back country programs  
  • Cleaning and organizing equipment and teaching materials  
  • Cleaning and basic maintenance of company vehicles  
  • Statistics record keeping, team communication including email updates and program/ staff schedule information  
  • Introducing Guest Speakers and assisting with event set up and clean up  
  • Programming support and/or development  
  • Other duties as assigned  

 

Qualifications  

  • At least one year of experience as tour guide, naturalist, or environmental education experience with adults, families, and youth  
  • Excellent public presentation skills  
  • Basic first aid and CPR are required  
  • Ability to work well with a diverse schedule and a high degree of responsibility  
  • Positive and upbeat attitude in a customer service work environment  
  • In-depth knowledge of ecology and natural systems, ability to apply this knowledge to interpret the subarctic ecosystem  
  • Experience with computers and common office software programs  
  • A valid driver’s license with 5 years driving experience and a clean driving record is highly preferred. Staff cannot drive company vehicles without meeting this requirement. All staff must pass a background check.  
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the U.S. (we do not sponsor employment visas) 

 

Position Details  

Our season is from early May through early September. We will prioritize applicants who can commit to the entire season but will consider shorter durations.  

  • A typical work week will be five days on, two days off with most work hours being in the afternoon and evening. Schedules may vary based on program bookings  
  • $18-22 per hour, DOE  
  • Low cost, on-campus, shared housing may be available. Details will be given in the interview
