Department Brief Description: WestEd's Communications Department provides a wide range of institutional support to the agency's efforts in accomplishing its articulated mission. This support includes working with agency researchers, developers, and service providers to identify, develop, and disseminate useful research-based knowledge; producing collateral materials for the agency and its individual programs; continuously improving and populating WestEd's award-winning website; operating a full-service publishing house for in-house authors; representing WestEd and its work at conferences and in other venues - and conducting this work while integrating WestEd's approach to branding and agency visibility.
We work collaboratively with staff members from throughout the organization, as well as with external partners, to improve the reach and effectiveness of information exchange and to broaden and sustain WestEd's reputation for doing high-quality, meaningful, and effective work.
The Opportunity: The Communications Department is seeking a half-time WordPress website developer, with both front- and back-end experienced skills, to provide development support for new and existing project-specific websites. This person will work closely with the department's Web Operations Manager. At least ten years of WordPress development experience is required.
Core Focus Areas: This detail-oriented and enthusiastic web developer must have extensive experience in WordPress PHP development, JavaScript, HTML, and CSS/SASS. They must have the ability to view and export assets from Figma and be comfortable working within our existing WordPress environment: WP Engine, Genesis and GeneratePress frameworks, Advanced Custom Fields Pro, GitHub, and Local.
Attention to detail is essential across both frontend and backend development, as well as a high degree of collaboration with project managers, designers, and other developers. As this role is entirely remote, Slack and Zoom will be our primary methods of communication. Dedicated focused time will be necessary during collaborative efforts.
A solid understanding and implementation of web best practices and standards is required, as is a working knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA guidelines. This is vitally important to our mission, as it helps to ensure that people with any range of abilities can access our content, be they visually or cognitively impaired, have limited range of motion, or are reliant on a screen reader. With that in mind, the developer should have reliable testing procedures, in terms of functionality, browser compatibility, and accessibility.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Applicants are required to submit examples of projects - websites or GitHub - with an outline of your role and responsibilities to be considered.
Responsibilities: - Front- and back-end development includes working with Communication and other WestEd staff on new and existing WordPress websites, from a relatively simple custom brochure website to resource libraries.
- Collaboration with the team - project managers, designers, web developers, and clients - through Slack, video calls, and email. Clear and direct communication highly valued.
- Figma engagement to export assets, establish fonts, colors, sizing, etc.
- Build custom post types and PHP templates.
- Build resource libraries and taxonomies.
- Employ JavaScript solutions as needed.
- Integrate and customize third-party plugins, and when feasible, develop your own custom plugin or other solution to meet a project's needs.
- Enter and import content.
- Estimate time to develop small to large tasks and projects.
- Write clear documentation.
- WCAG 2.2 AA website accessibility considered throughout project lifecycle.
What We're Looking For: - 10+ years of custom WordPress development
- Advanced knowledge of WordPress, Genesis, GeneratePress, and other custom frameworks
- Advanced knowledge of PHP, JavaScript, jQuery, Ajax
- Advanced knowledge of HTML, CSS/SASS, Gulp
- Advanced knowledge of GitHub, command line, local development
- Advanced knowledge of ACF, complex taxonomies
- Advanced knowledge of WordPress plugin architecture
- Advanced knowledge of responsive websites
- Strong skills in Figma, Photoshop
- Ability to test cross-browser and cross-platform
- Working knowledge of WCAG 2.2 AA standards
- Familiarity or experience working in the education or nonprofit sector helpful
